2026 Lambing Season
Welcome to lambing season on the farm. Ivy was due today and at 3:30am she had a nice healthy 14.5lb ram lamb named Intrepid. With usual Texel vigor, he was up and eating and bouncing around in no time.
Feed Panels
New feed panels are up in the sheet barn. The sheer are loving the new set up and so are we.
Sheep in the Barn
80 sheep and 2 guard dogs in the bran before it gets super cold. Still have to finish the barn but at least this means less frozen water and less traveling to check on sheep. Josie brought all three groups in with amazing ease. She has become such a reliable partner. She collected ones that tuned back and didn’t miss a single one. I still don’t know why we waited so long to get a herding dog, but im glad we got Josie because I couldn’t imagine life without her.
It’s Cold
Eleanor is 8 now and when she goes out in the cold we make her wear a coat, even though she doesn’t need it. She wanted to help more the rams today and while she did try hearing lambs as a puppy, she has never been very successful once they’re bigger than her. So she rode shotgun with Amelia in the Gator while Josie herded the rams off the hill. Her coat keeps her ears warm and she looked pretty adorable wearing it, even if it doesn't her farm dog cred.
Home for the Winter
All the sheep are home before we’re predicted to get some heavy snow. The barn still isn’t quite done but at least everyone is close by. It’s hard to believe that we started sheep farming again with 4 Texels not that long ago and now we’re close to 80 ewes. Thank goodness we have some amazing neighbors who don’t mind our sheep mowing their fields and us mowing their hay. Lucky to line un a nice town with some amazing people.
Newt Scamander
A delayed welcome to the farm to our awesome new ram from Pine Knob. Some Scottish genetics in our new addition and we just turned him out with out amazing healing ewes. We’ve named him Newt Scamander and I can’t wait to see the lambs he makes out of Wellingtons daughters. Loving the build of these European Texels.
Dante
This is Dante, he is our handsome Scottish Blackface ram lamb from this year. He would love to remind everyone that we have a few processing dates left for 2025 so for anyone looking to stock up, reach out for whole or half labs or special orders of chickens. We also are at Saskadena Six every Saturday 9:30-12:30 for the market. We’ve also been thinking about meat CSA, anyone have thoughts? A little meat every month from us for 6-12 months, we’d love to talk to people who might be interested.
Lambs out on Pature
Lambs are looking good out on pasture this year. We have some great genetics and they’re showing. Excellent gains and grazing ability make some amazing lambs. Feel free to reach out if you’re looking for rams or ewes.
Bonie and Clyde
This is Bonnie and Clyde, they spend most of their time getting into trouble (or the hay feeder) together. The interesting thing about Bonnie and Clyde is that they don’t have the same mom. Their moms are twins who happened not to get marked by the ram last fall but lambed on the same day at the same time this spring. Seems like if your moms are twins and you’re born at the same time you might as well act like you’re twins too. It’s nice to have a good friend who can help with some mischief.
A New Feeder for the Lambs
New lamb feeder so the weaned lambs can get nice tasty hay. So much easier now that we have so many.
Lots of Eggs
Spring has finally arrived on the farm and the chickens are laying quite a few eggs. If anyone is looking for eggs please feel free to reach out to us.
So Many Lambs
So many lambs this year it was time to give them the whole shed. Most are 60 days old so we’ve started weaning. Time for a good cleaning and an expansion. We’ll clean mamas and mamas still to be tomorrow.
Busy Busy
We had a busy day but I didn’t get a lot of good photos. We had the shearer come and 3 more lambs. Not sure why these yearlings are sick of carrying babies around so they’re coming early. Whether we are ready or not. Anyway here are a couple pictures of Maude and Jupiter that Amelia took while she was helping out.
Little Anise
Welcome to the world Anise. We were expecting to kick off our second group of lambers around the 21st but arrived to the barn to find that Elise had a little ram lamb with her. So I guess he couldn’t wait and decided to pop out early. So with that we’ve started our second group with a nice healthy ram lamb delivered on all his own.
Ice Storm and Sugaring
It’s been an interesting sugaring season on the farm thus far. We had an ice storm over the weekend, it warmed up enough today to thaw things out and make it safe enough to venture into the woods to make some necessary repairs. While there is more to do we have fixed the leaks enough to get us through the season.
Did you know Josie loves to help with all farm chores, while the trees don’t need herding she is great moral support!
Look at Them Grow
The lambs grow so quickly. They are at the age where they like the fresh hay in the morning as much as the ewes.
